Funded by SEL Society in collaboration with All Sherdukpen Blu
This project focuses on developing a working orthography for the Mey language (Sherdukpen), primarily spoken in Shergaon Circle and Rupa Subdivision of West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh. The current phase of the work is based in Shergaon.
Using a Community-Participatory Model, the project aims to create a modified Roman script that aligns with the community’s linguistic identity and socio-political context. Community members, especially the younger generation, actively contributed to script decisions to ensure cultural and practical relevance.
The project began on November 1, 2024, and resumed from April 21 to May 26, 2025, with collaboration between a linguist and local speakers. The initial fieldwork resulted in the documentation of over 1,000 words, sentences, and narratives, along with a preliminary sound inventory. The current phase involves organizing dictionary entries alphabetically. The final version of the Mey alphabet in the modified Roman script is still under development.
