We celebrated a combined International Mother Tongue Day, in collaboration with Department of Linguistics, University of Lucknow on Monday 22nd Feb. Dr Monali Longmailai, Assam University, Silchar and Dr Arti Pathak, Pt. Ravi Shankar University, Chhattisgarh virtually graced the occasion where students and staff from the Department were physically present.
After welcoming the guests Madri Kakoti requested Dr Anju Bharati, a well-known folk singer to sing a Ganesh Vandana. During the cultural program, an Assamese poem reflecting the importance of words was recited by Madri whereas Athip, an MA student from Thailand recited a Thai poem. Prof. K Srikumar recited few lines in Malyalam while Dr Abinash Chand presented in Bhojpuri.
During the academic session Dr Monali told the audience about the ways she had been involved in the preservation and documentation of the mother tongues of North East India. Dr Arti Pathak talked about the importance and history of the day in her mother tongue, Hindi. We successfully concluded the day by celebrating different mother tongues.
