Prof. Udaya Narayana Singh, currently the Chair-Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Amity University Haryana, delivered a lecture on February 22, 2024, for International Mother Tongue Day. He emphasized the rich multilingual landscape of India, noting that translation and retelling help bridge the cultural and temporal gaps among different communities. Prof. Singh identified four barriers that languages face: geographic, political, social, and informational, with the informational barrier being the most formidable. He questioned whether India’s rich and diverse cultures can withstand the challenges of the information age, despite advancements in technology that aid in the documentation and preservation of languages and cultures.
