About the Language

The Gadia Lohars are a nomadic community of ironsmiths from North India who are known for their decorated carts, or gadi, which they use as both homes and transportation. They can be found in Uttar Pradesh and the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh, and are easily recognized by their carts. The carts are used to store bedding, blankets, and other essentials, and can also accommodate household belongings like cash, ornaments, spices, and cakes. They are lohar (ironsmith) by profession who move on from one place to another place on bullock carts, which in Hindi are called gadi, hence the name 'Gadia Lohar'. In Rajasthan, they are called Gadulia Lohar while in Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, they are known as Gaddi Lohar, Bhuvariya or Gadia and Bhubalia Lohar, respectively. Although their mother tongue is Mewari, they are fluent in Hindi. There are many such settlements across the states. This data is collected from Madhya Pradesh.
