About the Language

Khortha is an Indo-Aryan language primarily spoken in the Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal region of India. Khortha is classified as a dialect of Eastern Magahi within the Bihari group of languages, part of the larger Indo-Aryan family. The name Khortha is believed to come from Kulthi (horse gram), the ancient staple crop of the area, or from Danghal Jamin, meaning "high land" near river banks.
