Tharu Cultural Preservation

Tharu is a famous tribe of North India and Nepal. Different groups are found in different regions- Rana, Dangaura, Kochila/ Moringa, Chitwania, and Kathariya. Most population of Tharu exists in the Himalayan Tarai Region on the Indo-Nepal border.Tharu tribe populates Udham Singh Nagar, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur-kheeri, Gonda, Basti, Bahraich, Gorakhpur, and Motihari District of India and Dang, Chitwan, Bardiya, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Morng, Saptari, Jhapa District of Nepal.

The main occupations of this tribal community are agriculture, hunting, and fishing. Historically, they were the only ones that were able to reside in the malarial jungles on the Indo-Nepal border. Tharu people have a very rich and prosperous culture. They make different variety of food. They have a rich oral tradition with lots of folk songs, folk literature, etc. They have a rich worship system also. At the time of various festivals, they demonstrate their culture with great enthusiasm. Their folk-dance form and songs are very famous.

The objective of the present project if to record and archive oral traditions, customs and most importantly stories & songs of a Tharu group residing in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh.
