Socio-Cultural Survey of 2 Raji Hamlets

A pilot survey of two Raji hamlets Chakarpur and Khirdwari was completed by SEL team comprising of Vishnu Singh and Ajay. They started on 9th August 2019 and returned back on 13th August. They collected census data and socio-cultural information from the informants. Some very interesting socio-cultural facts were found by them.

Raji community is a close group community where marriage use to take place outside the family/ clan (dhara)so as a rule they practice community endogamy and the village and clan (Dhara) exogamy(Bisht, B.S.). The team found that three Raji girls married outside the community ( their husbands are from Kanpur district and do not belong to Raji tribe) and their husbands have shifted to Raji village. The heir of such couple is called as ‘ Desi’. All the families either do farming, wood cutting ( Chiraan) or work as daily wage laborers. During interviews some of them show their concern about their future, originally being a hunter- gatherer tribe , it was not Raji community trait. They are worried about the fact that the land which they plough is not in their name so in future administration could ask them to vacate the area. Except these three families all the other families use Raji language for inter- group communication especially in home domain. Due to bad road condition and heavy rain the team could not visit the other hamlet.
